The Swiss Cancer League set up the ‘Study Group for Complementary and Alternative Methods in Cancer’ (SCAC) in 1982 and was one of the first leagues in Europe to do so.
Today the SCAC is supported by the Swiss Cancer League and consists of 3 permanent collaborators who work part time. Twice a year the SCAC has general meetings in Berne, Switzerland for its 40 members from several European countries. About 25 health professionals, members from other cancer leagues, researchers active in the field of CAM (complementary and alternative medicine) and guests participate at each meeting. New documentations or scientific findings are presented and discussed and the members inform each other about the ongoing work or set up projects.
Throughout the years the work of the group represents the changing attitude towards CAM in the medical system and in society. So far 45 documentations have been released or published in medical journals or the group’s homepage to inform health professionals and patients. The documentations deal with a whole variety of different complementary and alternative methods which are used by patients who are suffering from cancer. In the meantime the new documentations for health professionals are accompanied by a short form for patients.
The Swiss Cancer League (www.swisscancer.ch) made a profound contribution to set up the CAM-Cancer project.
