Acupuncture and acupressure of Neiguan (P6) have been compared to no treatment or placebo treatment with regard to nausea and vomiting. When given in addition to standard anti-emetic treatment in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy the symptoms are further reduced. Studies of acupuncture or acupressure given without concurrent standard anti-emetic treatment have not been done. The included studies have not specifically registered adverse effects, but acupuncture has, in other studies, been shown to have few serious adverse effects. The anti-emetic effect is likely mediated via the central opioid pathway.
