Prevalence of CAM use

CAM use among cancer patients seems to be higher than among individuals in the general population. However, figures on CAM use range between fewer than 10 percent and over 80 percent in surveys of cancer patients in Europe. Several factors contribute to this substantial variation in prevalence data, such as the definition of CAM or characteristics of study participants.

This overview presents core data of all European surveys with more than 100 participants:

  • period of data collection indicates the time of data collection of the original survey
  • number of included patients in the survey
  • diagnosis: indicates the variety of cancer diagnoses of study participants
  • prevalence of CAM in this individual study
  • CAM, mostly used: gives the modality of CAM that was used most frequently by study participants
